The Freedom Our Heroes Fought For: Then and Now

Babylyn Buchan

As we commemorate Philippine Independence this month of June, we are reminded not only of the sacrifices made by our national heroes, but also of the deeper meaning behind the freedom they fought for. It was never just about the end of colonization—it was about the beginning of our right to define ourselves, our identity, and our future as Filipinos. Today, more than a century later, the struggle for freedom has taken a new form.

In a world now shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and hyperconnectivity, the challenge is no longer about reclaiming our land—but about protecting our culture. As technology rapidly advances, so does the risk of cultural erasure. Global trends move fast. AI can generate designs, write stories, even mimic human creativity. But what it cannot replicate is the soul—the memory, meaning, and lived experiences that are embedded in our heritage.

Our national heroes dreamed of a generation that could speak freely, live with dignity, and celebrate who they are. That generation is us. But the question remains: how do we carry their legacy forward in a time when digital voices are louder than cultural truths? How do we remain rooted while the world moves faster than ever?

For the Filipino youth, this is your calling. You may not need to march into battle, but you are called to defend something just as precious: our identity. You are called to be aware, intentional, and proud of your heritage. You are called to tell our stories—not just through books or lectures, but through what you wear, what you share, and how you live.

Even in fashion, the choices we make speak volumes. Every time we choose to wear a TERNO or a Barong Tagalog, we carry with us generations of artistry, community, and resilience. Cultural fashion is not a costume or a trend—it is a form of resistance, a visible declaration of pride. In a time when fast fashion and AI-generated designs dominate, handcrafted Filipino garments remain deeply human. They remind us of who we are and where we come from. They are our modern-day armour.

Before the Independence month ends, may we remember that freedom is not just a right—it is a responsibility. The freedom we enjoy today was hard-won. It’s now in our hands to protect it—not just with words, but through conscious action. We must support Filipino artisans, preserve traditional crafts, and champion platforms that celebrate our culture.

Let us live the values of independence daily: by choosing local, by learning our history, by wearing our heritage, and by passing it on. In the face of a rapidly evolving digital world, the most revolutionary thing we can do is to stay rooted in who we are.

Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! Mabuhay ang ating kalayaan!
